LOS ANGELES/HAWAII: Chuck Norris, the American martial artist, film star and cultural icon best known for his roles in Walker, Texas Ranger and a string of 1980s action films, has died at the age of 86, his family said Friday.
Norris died on Thursday in Kauai, Hawaii, following a sudden medical emergency that led to his hospitalization, his family announced on social media. They said he was surrounded by family and “at peace” at the time of his passing.
Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Oklahoma, he rose from a martial arts champion and U.S. Air Force veteran to one of Hollywood’s most recognisable action stars. After early roles in films, Norris gained global fame in the 1990s as the tough‑as‑nails federal agent in the long‑running television series Walker, Texas Ranger.
Over a decades‑long career, he featured in a range of action movies including Missing in Action, The Delta Force, and Code of Silence, building a screen persona around martial arts prowess and rugged American heroism.
Norris also became an unexpected internet staple, spawning a viral series of “Chuck Norris facts” that playfully exaggerated his toughness and cultural presence. Despite his tough‑guy image, friends and colleagues often noted his humility and work ethic.
Global tributes pour in
Tributes have streamed in from around the world. Texas Governor Greg Abbott hailed Norris as a “legend” who embodied the grit, patriotism and values of his home state. Former NFL star Robert Griffin III and other entertainers also paid homage on social media, recalling his influence both on and off screen.
Fans in Norris’s home state and beyond shared memories of his roles and life, with many expressing shock that the star — who had marked his 86th birthday with an upbeat social media video just days before — had died.
Personal life and legacy
Norris served in the United States Air Force before turning to martial arts, where he won multiple championships and developed his own discipline, Chun Kuk Do. He later transitioned into film and television, becoming one of the genre’s enduring stars.
His family requested privacy as they mourned and thanked fans for their support. Plans for memorials or public tributes have not yet been announced.
Norris is survived by his children and a global fanbase that cemented his status not just as an action hero but as a cultural icon whose influence spanned generations of moviegoers and martial arts enthusiasts.
