ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power Division, Owais Ahmed Laghari, announced that reforms in net metering will be introduced in the next few weeks.
Speaking at an event, the minister said the government is transforming the power sector into a fully digital, transparent, and consumer-friendly system.
He emphasized that the future of energy is linked to eco-friendly sources, and Pakistan is moving rapidly in that direction. By 2035, the country aims to generate 90 per cent of its electricity from clean and green energy, while currently, 52 per cent of Pakistan’s electricity is produced from clean energy—a historic milestone.
Sardar Owais Laghari highlighted that Pakistan’s solar revolution has become a global example, with citizens independently installing 50 gigawatts of solar panels across the country.
He added that privatization of DISCOs, reduction of circular debt, and better services for electricity consumers are top government priorities. He also noted that poor countries contribute less to emissions but bear the heaviest burden of climate impacts.
The minister said Asia is emerging as a major energy hub, consuming 48 per cent of the world’s energy. Pakistan has strengthened its presence in Asia’s fast-growing solar market by importing 17 gigawatts of solar energy.
He further mentioned that solarization of tube wells in Balochistan is significantly improving the water and energy situation. To empower consumers, the government has introduced the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” app, which will enhance transparency in electricity usage and billing.
Owais Laghari pointed out that despite contributing less than 1 per cent to global emissions, Pakistan remains among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to climate risks.
