CM Maryam pledges support for Google Chromebook factory in Punjab

LAHORE: Punjab is set to become the site of a new Google Chromebook factory, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz pledging full support for the initiative.

A high-level delegation from Google for Education and Tech Valley met with CM Maryam Nawaz to discuss the project, which aims to enhance access to technology and modern learning tools in the province. The Chromebooks will feature three major software packages, including the AI toolkit and “AI Gemini” for students, the “Read Along” application to support English learning, and “Canva” for creative projects.

The delegation was led by Kevin Callis, Global Director of Google for Education, and included Tech Valley’s Chief Information Officer, Omar Farooq. They praised CM Maryam Nawaz’s leadership and vision, particularly her focus on promoting advanced information technology education for girls.

During the briefing, the delegation highlighted Google for Education’s ongoing efforts in Punjab, including training over 2,000 teachers in public schools, with plans to expand IT training to additional educators. The initiative also extends to providing IT training to students, aiming to make information technology an integral part of basic education.

CM Maryam Nawaz lauded Google for Education’s support in promoting IT and education in Punjab, stating that the province is committed to becoming a hub for artificial intelligence. She reaffirmed that the provincial government would offer full assistance in establishing the Chromebook factory.
