Colby Donaldson’s return to Survivor ended in the most unexpected way possible, with the veteran contestant voted out on his birthday during one of the season’s most chaotic episodes.

The 52-year-old was eliminated in the two-hour “Blood Moon” episode, which featured a rare triple elimination immediately after the long-awaited merge. Three players went home that night, Kamilla Karthigesu, Genevieve Mushaluk and Donaldson, with his exit emerging as the most emotional moment.
A twist that left him exposed
The episode’s format split contestants into separate tribal councils, stripping players of control at the exact moment alliances were shifting. Donaldson entered the vote already vulnerable, having injured his foot in a recent challenge and lost his vote earlier in the game. With no vote and limited mobility, he had little room to influence the outcome, making him an easy target as the game reset after the merge.
From ‘Survivor’ icon to easy target
Donaldson is not just another contestant. He is one of the show’s original stars, finishing as runner-up in 2001 and helping define the early years of Survivor. However, as the game has evolved, experience alone has not guaranteed protection. As newer players took control, his position quickly weakened.

Voted out on his birthday, Donaldson’s departure carried added emotional weight. “My heart is full, and I have nothing but appreciation, humility and gratitude,” he said as he exited, visibly holding back tears.
Kamilla Karthigesu and Genevieve Mushaluk were also eliminated during the episode, but it was Donaldson’s exit that defined the night. For a player who helped shape Survivor, the milestone season ended not with a comeback, but with a reminder of how much the game has changed.
