Cold intensifies in northern regions; NDMA issues alert

Murree snowfall

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert warning of a severe weather situation across several parts of the country, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain starting from January 16.

According to the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center, a strong cold wave is expected to affect Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with temperatures likely to remain extremely low during night and early morning hours until the end of January.

The alert warns of moderate to heavy snowfall in upper and mountainous areas, which could disrupt road connectivity, transportation, and power supply. Authorities have cautioned that snowfall may also increase the risk of avalanches and landslides, urging residents and travelers to exercise caution.

NDMA noted that harsh weather conditions could pose serious health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing illnesses, and advised the public to take preventive measures.

In the plains, cold and dry weather is expected to persist, with frost likely in some areas. The authority warned that frost could damage crops and orchards, advising farmers to take protective steps. Unnecessary travel to mountainous regions has been discouraged, and motorists have been urged to use snow chains on vehicle tires in snow-covered areas.

The NDMA also accentuated the safe use of heaters and warm clothing during extreme cold, calling for special care of vulnerable groups.

Provincial authorities and district administrations have been directed to take advance preparedness measures, ensure the availability of snow-clearing machinery, and maintain resources at tourist destinations, particularly residential facilities.

The public has been advised to rely on official sources, including television, radio, verified social media accounts, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile app, for accurate and timely weather updates.

The NDMA said it has issued necessary instructions to relevant institutions to ensure preparedness against all possible weather-related hazards.
