police arrest two for courier parcels theft

GILGIT: The Gilgit police have arrested two employees of a courier company, including its manager, for allegedly stealing hundreds of delivery parcels.

The suspects have been identified as Ghulam Murtaza, a resident of Muzaffarabad currently residing in Jutial, and Akash Javed, the manager of the courier firm from Taxila.

According to the police, both individuals confessed to stealing the parcels during interrogation. The stolen items are estimated to be worth approximately over Rs600,000.

Jutial Station House Officer (SHO) Aurangzeb told HUM News English that the investigation began following a complaint lodged by an employee of the courier company just before Eid, reporting missing parcels meant for delivery.

When police reached the crime scene, the manager initially informed them that nearly 300 parcels were missing but failed to provide further details, he added.

“Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, we observed an individual covered in a shawl entering the office. Only the outline of clothing was visible. We identified the suspect through his clothes and apprehended him who confessed to breaking the lock on the manager’s instructions,” SHO Aurangzeb said.

He added that during the investigation, the suspect revealed he had recently been hired as a cashier at the company. When he arrived at the office to assume his duties, the manager allegedly instructed him to break the office locks in order to secure his position—an act he complied with.

The SHO further said after the incident the manager went to Taxila for Eid. “When he returned, we arrested him too, who confessed to his crime. Further investigations are underway to determine if additional individuals were involved in the parcels theft.”

In a statement, District Police Officer (DPO) Zahoor Ahmed commended SHO Aurangzeb and his team for their swift and effective response. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards crime and pledged continued efforts to ensure justice is served.
