Court denies physical remand of Shah Mehmood Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: Local court has denied physical remand of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in GHQ attack case and sent him to Adiala Jail.

Duty Magistrate Syed Jahangir Ali conducted hearing of attack on GHQ case against Qureshi. The prosecution demand 30 days physical remand of the senior PTI leader.

He was presented before Duty Magistrate Syed Jahangir Ali’s court in the GHQ attack case under strict security measures.

At the outset of the hearing, police sought a 30-day physical remand of the former foreign minister but the plea was opposed by the lawyers of the PTI vice president.

The lawyers argued that those named in the May 9 violence cases were acquitted and urged the court to acquit Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Later in the afternoon announcing the reserved verdict, duty magistrate denied the prosecution request for 30 day physical remand nad sent him back to Adiala Jail on 14 day judicial remand.

Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Qureshi was brought to judicial complex in an armoured vehicle with handcuffs to produce before the duty magistrate in May 9 vandalism case.

Police had made extraordinary security arrangements for the court appearance of Qureshi.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi was taken into custody on Wednesday from Adiala Jail.

Footage aired on television showed the former foreign minister being dragged by personnel into an armoured police vehicle.

On Tuesday, Shah Mehmood Qureshi was detained for 15 days on the orders of the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner.

The detention orders stated that Shah Mehmood Qureshi was involved in the case of attacking the GHQ, Rawalpindi gate on May 9, adding that his release may pose a threat to peace and order in society.

It further said that the city police officer suggested a 45-day detention on the report of the station house officer (SHO) concerned. The district intelligence committee also agreed with the report of the police and security institutions.
