Cricketer pledges World Cup earnings to earthquake victims

DUBAI: Afghanistan’s renowned cricketer, Rashid Khan, has made a heartfelt pledge to donate all of his match fees from the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 to support victims of the devastating earthquake that recently struck Afghanistan.

Expressing his deep sadness over the earthquake’s impact, Rashid Khan, shared his commitment to assist those affected by the tragedy. In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, he wrote, “I learned with great sadness about the tragic consequences of the earthquake that struck the western provinces (Herat, Farah, and Badghis) of Afghanistan. I am donating all of my [World Cup] match fees to help the affected people.”

He also announced that soon he will be launching a fundraising campaign to call upon those who can support the people in need.

The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.3, struck Afghanistan’s western provinces on October 7. Regarded as one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades, it claimed the lives of nearly 500 people, according to a spokesperson for the Taliban.

Rashid Khan’s generous gesture has garnered widespread praise on social media, with many expressing admiration for his compassionate response during this challenging time. Netizens hailed him as a “true Afghani legend” and lauded his act of kindness as a positive example during these trying moments.
