WEB DESK: In a successful operation, personnel from the Pakistan Customs Jinnah International Airport Collectorate thwarted an attempt to smuggle gold valued at Rs11 million on Tuesday.

Customs spokesperson Syed Irfan Ali reported that vigilant customs staff at the airport’s international arrival lounge intercepted a passenger named Nizamuddin, who had recently arrived in Karachi from Dubai on Emirates Airlines flight EK 606.

The interception took place in the green channel, triggered by suspicions raised during routine checks.

Upon questioning the passenger about his luggage, Nizamuddin denied any irregular items. However, further scrutiny through scanning revealed concealed gold ornaments.

Acting promptly, the customs staff transferred the luggage to the examination counter for a more thorough inspection, conducted in the presence of the passenger.

According to The News, despite persistent questioning, Nizamuddin failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the presence of the gold ornaments in his possession.

Subsequently, the customs staff seized the recovered jewellery, totaling 49 tonnes and estimated at a substantial Rs11.47 million.

Legal proceedings are now underway under the Customs Act, and additional investigations into the incident are in progress.
