Data Ganj Bakhsh Urs starts tomorrow: Sept 7 declared public holiday

LAHORE: In preparation for the 980th Urs celebrations of the revered Sufi saint Data Ganj Bakhsh, Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced that a public holiday has been declared in Lahore on September 7 (Thursday), the final day of the ceremony.

The three-day Urs festivities, which mark the annual death anniversary of Data Ganj Bakhsh Syed Ali Hajwari (RA), will commence tomorrow.

“We are committed to ensuring a memorable and well-organized event,” CM Naqvi stated. “During the three-day Urs celebration, from Tuesday to Thursday, we are making extensive arrangements to facilitate all attendees.”

Among the preparations, CM Naqvi mentioned plans for the langar khana (community kitchen), where provisions will be made for all participants to partake in meals. Additionally, a mehfil-e-samaa featuring renowned qawwals is set to entertain the devotees.

CM Naqvi emphasized that comprehensive arrangements have been put in place for the Chehlum, processions, and Urs, while addressing traffic concerns. He assured that a traffic management plan has been devised, and parking facilities will be available if security measures are met.

Furthermore, CM Naqvi revealed upcoming initiatives for the expansion of Data Darbar, including the expansion of mosque and shrine premises.

For the safety and security of the visitors, an elaborate surveillance system has been established, comprising 2,500 closed-circuit cameras and a control room. Policewomen will also be deployed to enhance security measures.

Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Secretary Syed Tahir Raza disclosed that Rs125 million have been allocated for providing free food and other amenities to devotees during the Urs. He detailed the deployment of 3,000 police personnel, walk-through gates, metal detectors, security guards, and assistance from volunteers.

In response to the current security environment, a bomb disposal squad will be on standby at all times, and medical assistance will be readily available with the presence of Rescue 1122 staff, ambulances, and special arrangements in nearby hospitals.

Efforts have been made to ensure uninterrupted power and gas supply, with additional generator and gas company cooperation secured. Vehicle parking areas have been designated at various locations to accommodate visitors.

Adequate arrangements for ablution, drinking water supply, medical services, and cleanliness maintenance have been finalized, demonstrating a commitment to the comfort and well-being of those attending the Urs.

With these comprehensive preparations in place, the 980th Urs of Data Ganj Bakhsh promises to be a spiritually enriching and safe event for all participants.
