HERMOSILLO: A powerful explosion ripped through a supermarket in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo on Saturday, killing at least 23 people and injuring 11 others, according to local authorities.

Officials confirmed that children were among the victims of the blast, which occurred at a “Waldo’s” store located in the city center. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and the injured were transported to several hospitals across Hermosillo for urgent medical treatment.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video statement that the state government is providing full medical and psychological support to the victims and their families. He added that a “comprehensive and transparent” investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the explosion and identify any responsible parties.

Authorities have so far ruled out terrorism or deliberate violence as potential causes, though the exact source of the blast remains under investigation.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences on the social media platform X, writing that she was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and sending sympathy to the families of those killed and injured.

She wrote, “My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the people who died in the fire that occurred in a store in downtown Hermosillo. I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured.”

Officials have urged the public to follow only verified information from government sources as investigators continue to examine the scene.
