Doja Cat hits back at Timothée Chalamet after opera comments spark backlash

Doja Cat has pushed back at Timothée Chalamet after the actor sparked criticism for suggesting that audiences no longer care about opera and ballet.

The singer addressed the controversy in a TikTok video, defending the centuries-old art forms and praising the dedication of performers who continue to keep them alive.

In the video, Doja Cat pointed out that opera and ballet have existed for hundreds of years and remain widely respected by audiences.

She argued that theatres would still be full if someone attended an opera performance today, adding that audiences sit quietly during shows out of respect for the craft.

The singer also highlighted the intense physical demands of ballet, saying dancers endure significant pain and sacrifice because of their passion for the art.

The remarks came after Chalamet triggered debate during a CNN–Variety town hall in Austin, Texas on February 21.

During a discussion about the future of cinema with actor Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet said he would not want to work in opera or ballet purely to help sustain those industries.

The actor added that “no one cares about this anymore”, comments that quickly drew criticism online.

Opera organisations also responded to the remarks.

The Metropolitan Opera posted a video showing performers and staff preparing for a production, alongside a caption aimed at Chalamet.

“This one’s for you, Timothée Chalamet,” the company wrote.

The post was widely shared by fans and performers defending the relevance of opera and ballet.

Doja Cat’s response adds another voice to the growing debate, with the singer stressing that appreciation for the arts continues even as the industry faces challenges.

The controversy has since sparked wider discussion online about the role of traditional performing arts in modern culture.
