Donald Glover has joined the voice cast of Super Mario Galaxy Movie, taking on the role of the beloved dinosaur Yoshi as Nintendo unveiled a new trailer for the animated sequel.

The casting announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct livestream on Monday, where Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri confirmed several new additions to the film’s expanding ensemble.

The upcoming film follows 2023’s global hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Chris Pratt returning as Mario as the character embarks on a new adventure that takes the Mushroom Kingdom heroes beyond their familiar world and into space.

Several returning stars are set to reprise their roles, including Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

The sequel also introduces several new characters. Issa Rae will voice Honey Queen, while Luis Guzmán joins the cast as Wart. Benny Safdie will appear as Bowser Jr., and Brie Larson has been cast as Princess Rosalina, a character first introduced in the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy.

According to the newly released trailer, Mario, Luigi and Peach reunite after defeating Bowser in the previous film but soon find themselves facing a new threat involving Bowser and his son.

Their latest quest takes them across a series of cosmic worlds, including a fiery volcanic planet, an underwater realm and a futuristic landscape filled with neon-lit obstacles and gravity-defying challenges.

Along the way, the heroes join forces with Rosalina and Yoshi, the egg-laying dinosaur companion known for his signature “Yoshi!” call.

The trailer also teases appearances from several fan-favourite characters, including Birdo, while Wart and Honey Queen appear to play antagonistic roles in the story.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and will be released in cinemas on April 1 through Universal Pictures, Illumination and Nintendo.
