Dr Mehmood Khan: first Pakistani scientist to receive Saudi citizenship

RIYADH: In an unprecedented move, Pakistani scientist Dr Mehmood Khan will be granted Saudi citizenship, according to a list published by financial news portal Argaam.

Dr Khan joins an elite group of doctors, researchers, and entrepreneurs from around the world who will be offered Saudi citizenship.

According to Arab News, Saudi Arabia opened its citizenship to highly skilled professionals as part of its Vision 2030, aiming to attract and retain exceptional global talent to enhance the kingdom’s economic and social development.

Dr Mehmood Khan, who holds American citizenship, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Evolution Foundation, a non-profit organisation headquartered in Riyadh.

The foundation, with an annual budget of around $1 billion, aims to enhance geriatric treatment facilities, reduce drug side effects, and improve access to treatments to extend human life. The organisation plans to expand its influence with offices in other international locations.

Pioneering Geroscience Research

The Evolution Foundation funds groundbreaking research in geroscience, a biomedical field focused on understanding how aging contributes to various diseases. This initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering scientific innovation and attracting top global talent.

Royal Decree for Global Expertise

In line with a royal decree, Saudi Arabia has announced citizenship for scientists, medical experts, innovators, researchers, individuals with unique abilities and skills, and businessmen. The list includes notable individuals from Pakistan and India.

Prominent in the Field

Dr Mehmood Khan, a graduate of the University of Liverpool Medical School in England, has had a distinguished career, including senior roles such as Vice Chairman of Global Research and Development and Chief Scientific Officer at PepsiCo, and President of the Global R&D Center at Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

In an interview with Open Silicon Valley, he expressed pride in his Pakistani heritage despite spending much of his life abroad.

Dr Khan’s recognition as a Saudi citizen highlights his significant contributions to science and his ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare and biomedical research.
