At least 20 buildings collapsed in Cali after Colombia earthquake

WEB DESK: At least 20 buildings have collapsed in Cali after a massive earthquake that hit Colombia on Monday morning, according to Reuters.

The earthquake, of magnitude 6.6, struck the country’s Pacific province of Choco, causing significant damage to buildings, local authorities said.

The earthquake was felt in the capital Bogota and parts of neighbouring Venezuela, according to Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).

The tremor struck at 7:34 am local time at a depth of 79 kilometres, with authorities assessing the extent of the damage.

Choco Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi said the epicentre was near San Jose del Palmar, while injuries and significant damage were reported in the provincial capital Quibdo.

“We have just experienced a major earthquake in the department of Choco. We are concerned about aftershocks,” Cordoba-Curi said in a post on X.

She added that authorities had launched a damage assessment and would issue an initial official report shortly.

The US tsunami warning system said that there was no tsunami warning after the quake hit Colombia today.
