San Jose Earthquakes will look to continue their impressive defensive form when they host San Diego FC on Saturday night in a high-stakes All-California clash.
The Earthquakes have made a statement early in the MLS season with four clean sheets in five games, a stark contrast to last year’s squad that narrowly missed the playoffs.
Second-year coach Bruce Arena credited the achievement to the entire squad, saying, “This improvement isn’t just down to the back line and the goalkeeper. It’s a credit to the entire team.”
Brazilian goalkeeper Daniel has been in top form, saving 14 of 15 shots on target and sitting on four clean sheets. A fifth shutout would tie his MLS career high, cementing him as a key figure in San Jose’s defensive resurgence.
Offensively, the Earthquakes have contributions from multiple players: Ousseni Bouda, Preston Judd, and Daniel Munie have each scored twice, while former Tottenham and RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner has provided two assists and is gradually building his fitness for full 90-minute outings.
San Diego FC, meanwhile, arrives after a grueling schedule that included two rounds in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Despite exiting the tournament 6-3 on aggregate against Toluca, coach Mikey Varas believes the experience will benefit his squad in maintaining focus under pressure.
San Diego is unbeaten in league play, with Marcus Ingvartsen leading their scoring with four goals and Anders Dreyer contributing three.
However, the absence of Christopher McVey, serving a one-game suspension after a red card, could weaken their defensive stability.
As San Jose hosts their California rivals, all eyes will be on whether the Earthquakes can extend their clean sheet streak and reinforce their credentials as early-season Western Conference contenders.
