LAHORE: Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been released on bail by a local court Tuesday in relation to a money laundering case filed against him by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The decision to grant bail was made by a special court after considering Elahi’s bail application. The former Punjab chief minister had been arrested by the FIA on allegations of money laundering.
As a condition of his release on bail, Elahi has been required to submit a surety bond of Rs500,000.
Judge Aslam Gondal of the Banking Offenses Court delivered the verdict and criticized the FIA for their uncooperative behaviour. Despite a court order, the FIA failed to submit the necessary records.
On June 20, the FIA had charged Elahi and his son with money laundering and suspicious transactions. Elahi was taken into custody the following day and was subsequently sent to jail for a 14-day judicial remand.
It is worth noting that Elahi had previously been arrested on June 1 in a corruption case, amidst a crackdown on PTI following protests on May 9. He had been rearrested multiple times in various cases, including the two money laundering cases.
