ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan has announced that general election in Gilgit-Baltistan will be held on June 7.
Polling for the G-B assembly will take place across the mountainous territory on the scheduled date, the commission confirmed.
The development follows earlier report carried out by The Punch sayibng that elections in Gilgit-Baltistan were likely to be held on June 7.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly was dissolved on November 24, 2025. Elections were initially scheduled for January 24, 2026, but were postponed due to severe winter conditions in the region.
Authorities have now finalised June 7 as the new polling date, with a revised election schedule expected to be issued soon, according to official sources.
The upcoming elections will be the fourth since the introduction of the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order 2009, which granted the region a degree of political autonomy.
Under the 2009 framework, the Pakistan People’s Party formed the first regional government. In the 2015 elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz came to power, with Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman serving a full term.
The 2020 elections brought the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to power, though subsequent political changes followed the disqualification of then-chief minister Khalid Khurshid. A like-minded group later formed the government, which completed its term in November 2025.
The announcement sets the stage for a fresh political contest in the strategically important region ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
