LAHORE: Every year, the air pollution rate in Pakistan, particularly in the province of Punjab, witnesses a significant increase, attributed to various factors.

One major contributor is the operation of vehicles using conventional fuel, which emits hazardous smoke and contributes to environmental pollution.

In response to this escalating issue, the Punjab government has taken a proactive step by introducing electric rickshaws as a measure to combat air pollution.

Collaborating with the transport department and a local private company, the government has launched these electric rickshaws in Lahore.

The introduction of electric rickshaws took place during a meeting chaired by Punjab Transport Secretary Ahmed Javed Qazi.

During this event, the Transport Secretary not only announced the initiative but also personally experienced driving an electric rickshaw with the guidance of experts.

Anticipating positive outcomes, it is expected that the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly these rickshaws, will play a pivotal role in curbing pollution issues in Pakistan, especially in Punjab.

Lahore, frequently ranked among the most polluted cities globally, faces challenges such as smog and a poor air quality index.

The Transport Secretary stressed that the use of electric rickshaws in Pakistan will substantially decrease both air and noise pollution.

Providing additional insights, these electric rickshaws boast an impressive range, capable of travelling up to 150 km on a single charge.

This feature not only promotes sustainability but also helps in saving fuel costs, a crucial aspect considering the high fuel prices exceeding Rs260 per litre in Pakistan.

Recognising the global concerns of climate change and air pollution, many countries have taken significant measures to address these threats.

The adoption of electric vehicles, including cars and bikes, has gained prominence worldwide due to their efficiency, fuel-saving benefits, and zero emissions, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
