Elon Musk has ignited fresh controversy after claiming he plans to file for full custody of his young son with influencer Ashley St. Clair, following her recent public remarks about trans rights.
The billionaire, 54, made the claim in a reply on X on Monday, writing that he would be seeking full custody “today” because of what he described as statements implying she might “transition a one-year-old boy”. He did not provide any evidence for the allegation.
The post immediately set off a storm online, with users questioning both the accuracy of the claim and the sudden escalation.
St. Clair, 27, had earlier posted a series of messages expressing remorse over her past transphobic remarks, saying she had since changed her views and wanted to make amends.
“I feel immense guilt for my role,” she wrote. “And even more guilt that things I have said in the past may have caused my son’s sister more pain.”
She was referring to Musk’s daughter, Vivian Wilson, who publicly came out as trans in 2020.
St. Clair added that she had been privately trying to learn more about the trans community and advocate for people she felt she had previously hurt.
“I don’t really know how to make amends for many of these things, but I have been trying incredibly hard privately,” she wrote. “Even this reply will become right-wing hysteria, but yeah, I am sorry. Let me know how I can help.”
She did not publicly mention transitioning a child in her statements.
Musk, who has previously shared strong anti-trans views, responded by saying he would pursue full custody. It remains unclear whether any formal legal paperwork has been filed.
Why Elon Musk and Ashley St. Clair are already locked in a public dispute
In February 2025, St. Clair announced that Musk was the father of her baby boy, Romulus, which would make the child his 13th. Musk has six children with his ex-wife Justine Musk, three with musician Grimes and four with technology executive Shivon Zillis.
“Five months ago, I welcomed a new baby into the world. Elon Musk is the father,” St. Clair wrote at the time. “I have not previously disclosed this to protect our child’s privacy and safety.”
Musk later publicly questioned the claim.
“I don’t know if the child is mine or not, but am not against finding out. No court order is needed,” he wrote on X. He also claimed he had given St. Clair $2.5 million and was sending her $500,000 a year.
St. Clair disputed that version of events, alleging Musk had refused to take a paternity test and used financial support as leverage.
“Elon, we asked you to confirm paternity through a test before our child was even born. You refused,” she wrote. “You weren’t sending me money, you were sending support for your child… until you withdrew most of it.”
Tensions have only continued to escalate
In recent months, St. Clair has become increasingly vocal in her criticism of Musk. She recently accused X’s AI chatbot, Grok, of generating inappropriate and altered images of her without consent.
Musk has not directly addressed those claims but has said that anyone using Grok to create illegal content will face consequences.
As of now, neither Musk nor St. Clair has confirmed any formal custody proceedings beyond his social media post. However, the latest comments have added a highly charged new chapter to an already volatile situation.
