MUMBAI: In a thrilling group-stage clash of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, England edged past Nepal by a narrow margin of four runs, defending a total of 184-7.
England batted first after winning the toss and looked to set a challenging target for Nepal. Jos Buttler gave the innings a brisk start with 26 off 17 balls, while Jacob Bethell anchored the middle overs with a patient 55 off 35 deliveries. Skipper Harry Brook added an aggressive 53 from 32 balls, and Will Jacks finished with a quickfire unbeaten 39 off 18 balls. Despite a few quick wickets falling, Phil Salt and Jofra Archer managed just one run each; England’s total was bolstered by five extras conceded by Nepal, ending on 184-7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 185, Nepal showcased remarkable resilience and fought until the final delivery. The innings was anchored by Dipendra Singh Airee, who scored 44 off 29 balls with six boundaries and a six. Rohit Paudel contributed a steady 39 off 34 balls, while opener Kushal Bhurtel provided early momentum with 29 off 17 balls. Lokesh Bam’s late assault, unbeaten on 39 off 20 balls, brought Nepal to the brink of a historic upset. Aarif Sheikh and Aasif Sheikh also chipped in with valuable contributions in the middle order.

Despite maintaining a strong run rate, Nepal fell agonisingly short. Needing nine runs off the final over, they managed only five, allowing England’s bowlers to hold their nerve and secure a tense four-run victory.

The result highlighted England’s depth in both batting and bowling, while Nepal’s spirited performance underscored their growing competitiveness on the world stage. The narrow win ensures England remain in strong contention in the early stages of the tournament, while Nepal can take pride in pushing a former champion to the edge.
