WEB DESK: Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final after fighting back to defeat England 2-1 in a gripping semifinal on Wednesday.
The defending champions will now face Spain in the title clash on Sunday, with both football giants set to battle for the biggest prize in world football after overcoming England and France respectively in the last four.
The opening 45 minutes ended in favour of none, with England applying intense pressure and defending resolutely to frustrate the reigning champions.
Argentina remained composed despite the pressure, patiently circulating the ball and using Lionel Messi’s movement and midfield control to retain possession and gradually stretch England’s defensive shape.
Their disciplined buildup helped ease England’s early dominance and laid the foundation for a stronger second-half performance.
England eventually broke the deadlock through Anthony Gordon, raising hopes of a first World Cup final appearance since 1966.
However, Argentina responded with determination as Enzo Fernandez restored parity before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home the winning goal deep into stoppage time from a pinpoint Lionel Messi assist.
The victory sends Argentina into the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where they will face Spain.
Messi once again proved decisive, inspiring Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup final as the defending champions continue their bid to retain football’s biggest prize.
