Former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi has died after succumbing to injuries sustained in what Iranian media described as a US-Israel attack earlier this month.
According to reports carried by state-affiliated outlets, the 81-year-old senior diplomat passed away days after being critically wounded in a strike on April 1. Iranian news agencies Mehr and Isna said Kharazi had been targeted in what they termed a “terrorist attack” and described his death as martyrdom.
Kharazi was serving as head of Iran’s Strategic Council for International Relations at the time of the incident, a body linked to the country’s foreign ministry. Media reports also stated that his wife was killed during the same attack on their residence in Tehran.
A seasoned figure in Iranian diplomacy, Kharazi previously served as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations before taking office as foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 during President Mohammad Khatami’s tenure.
His death comes amid reports from Iranian sources alleging a series of targeted attacks on senior political and military figures since late February.
