Experts advise caution for public Wi-Fi use

ISLAMABAD: A study conducted by a cybersecurity firm has revealed that users’ data is at risk when using public Wi-Fi networks. Public Wi-Fi, popular in cafes, airports, and during travel, offers convenience but poses significant security risks.

Cybercriminals can create fake Wi-Fi networks or compromise existing ones, often using names similar to legitimate networks to deceive users. Once connected, personal information such as social media logins, banking details, and email addresses can be intercepted and misused.

Despite these risks, there are effective measures users can take to protect their data.

Kaspersky experts have provided a set of safe practices for using public Wi-Fi networks. They advise using public Wi-Fi sparingly and only when absolutely necessary due to potential security vulnerabilities.

Avoiding financial transactions on public Wi-Fi significantly reduces the risk of data interception. Utilizing a VPN encrypts data and shields online activities from unauthorized access, and modern VPNs do not significantly affect internet speed, making them suitable for continuous use.

Maintaining updated security software is crucial; users should keep antivirus signatures updated and ensure their operating system and software have the latest security patches.

Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security. Using secure browsers and search engines, such as Tor or DuckDuckGo, which prioritize user privacy, is also recommended.

DG National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) Cabinet Division Haidar Abbas emphasized additional precautionary measures for public Wi-Fi users.

He advised keeping the Windows Firewall on to block unauthorized access and staying updated with antivirus software and operating system patches. Abbas also recommends using secure internet tools, such as browsers and search engines that prioritize user privacy.
