Facebook delegation meets PM to discuss AI developments

ISLAMABAD: A five-member delegation from Facebook (META) met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and information technology (IT) in Pakistan on Tuesday.
The Facebook delegation was led by led by Vice President for Asia Pacific Simon Milner.

The meeting comes on the heels of Sharif’s announcement of a record budget allocation for the promotion of IT and AI, a huge investment in the country’s digital sectors.
During the meeting, the Facebook delegation outlined the company’s activities and services in Pakistan and the broader Asia Pacific region.
The social media company also highlighted its role in organising the first artificial intelligence competition in the region, held in Pakistan. The initiative was aimed at stimulating innovation and developing local talent in AI.
The PM talked about the importance of integrating IT and AI with Facebook’s technological prowess to boost technological capabilities. He directed relevant authorities to address and resolve any operational issues related to Facebook’s activities in Pakistan.
Shehbaz said that a collaboration between the government and international tech giants such as Facebook were needed to advance the digital media and AI sectors in Pakistan.

He highlighted the country’s substantial potential in the field of AI. The PM also pointed out the need for continued investment and support.
