ISLAMABAD: Authorities have busted a fake WhatsApp account that was created in the name of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Raja Sultan in Multan.
The account was used to blackmail and spread false information about the elections among the people.
According to the Hum Investigation Team, the fake account was created two weeks ago with a SIM card that was issued to a woman named Popal from district Kashmore. The SIM was initially used to send messages to two people on January 7.
The SIM card was obtained using her identity card without her knowledge. The investigation revealed that the SIM card was used to send messages on numbers from Pak Gate Multan.
The woman’s husband Babu Khan said that they were unaware of the misuse of his wife’s identity card and SIM card. He said that they did not know how to use WhatsApp and had no connection with the fake account.
The ECP officials took strict notice of the matter when they received several complaints from the people who were contacted by the fake account. The case was handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Wing for further investigation.
The FIA is probing the matter and trying to trace the culprit who created the fake account with the name and picture of the Chief Election Commissioner.
The spokesman for the ECP urged the people to be alert from these fake messages and propaganda and to ignore them. He said that the ECP was committed to ensuring free and fair elections in the country.
