Lahore Qalandars were penalised for ball tampering during a tense finish against Karachi Kings, a decision that proved decisive in the outcome of the match.
The incident unfolded at the end of the 19th over in the second innings, with Karachi requiring 14 runs from the final over. As fast bowler Haris Rauf prepared to bowl, Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and teammate Fakhar Zaman briefly gathered near the run-up, with all three players handling the ball.
On-field umpire Faisal Afridi closely observed the interaction and immediately requested the ball for inspection. Following a prolonged discussion with square-leg umpire Sharfuddoula, the officials concluded that the condition of the ball had been deliberately altered. As a result, five penalty runs were awarded to Karachi, and the ball was replaced.
Afridi reacts as Kings close in on target
The ruling left Lahore’s captain visibly frustrated, as the penalty reduced Karachi’s target to just nine runs from the final over. Despite his reaction on the field, Afridi refrained from elaborating on the decision during the post-match presentation, stating he would wait for clarification from the umpires.
The development significantly altered the course of the contest, placing Karachi in a commanding position heading into the final six deliveries.
Karachi seal victory to stay unbeaten
Although Khushdil Shah was dismissed on the first ball of the final over, the pressure quickly eased for Karachi. A wide delivery from Rauf added to Lahore’s woes before Abbas Afridi struck a boundary followed by a six to complete the chase with three balls remaining.
The win ensured Karachi maintained a perfect start to their campaign with two victories in as many matches, while Lahore were left to reflect on a costly moment that ultimately split their results for the season so far.
