WEB DESK: Iran-linked hackers have claimed responsibility for breaching the personal email account of FBI Director Kash Patel, leaking a series of private photographs and documents online.
The group, known as Handala, published the material on Friday, asserting that the high-ranking US official has joined their growing list of high-profile targets, according to the Express Tribune.
The Handala Hack Team, which describes itself as a pro-Palestinian vigilante group but is widely identified by Western intelligence researchers as a front for Iranian state cyber-operations, released several images of Patel.
These reportedly include photographs of the Director smoking cigars, posing in an antique convertible, and a self-portrait featuring a large bottle of spirits.
While the FBI has yet to issue a formal statement, a Justice Department official has confirmed the breach, noting that the published materials appear to be authentic.
Historical correspondence exposed
The leaked data appears to span nearly a decade of digital activity. Initial reviews of the uploaded samples suggest a combination of personal messages and professional correspondence dating from 2010 to 2019.
Although the emails predate his current tenure as head of the Bureau, the breach raises significant questions regarding the long-term digital security of senior American officials.
Data intelligence firms have noted that the Gmail address targeted in this incident matches credentials previously identified in historical dark web data leaks.
A pattern of state-sponsored disruption
This latest cyber-attack follows a string of aggressive operations attributed to the Handala group. Only weeks ago, the collective claimed to have infiltrated Stryker, a major Michigan-based medical technology firm, where they allegedly deleted a substantial volume of corporate data.
Experts believe these actions are part of a broader Iranian strategy to project cyber-power and retaliate against Western interests.
The incident coincides with further claims from Israeli security officials that Iranian operatives have also successfully compromised various security camera networks across the region.
