WEB DESK: A blaze swept through a garment unit in the city’s Export Processing Zone on Thursday, prompting an emergency response from Rescue 1122. Eleven fire tenders are working to control blaze at the garments factory, while the fire has also spread to an adjacent building, rescue officials say.

Earlier the intensity of the fire continued to increase, raising fears that two neighbouring factories might also catch fire. A chemical storage warehouse is located right next to the affected unit, while another adjacent facility deals in second-hand goods, heightening concerns that the blaze could spread further.

The rescue service said that its Central Command and Control centre immediately deployed a firefighting crew, an ambulance and a fire engine after receiving alerts about the incident. Thick smoke could be seen rising from the facility as teams worked to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading further.

Rescue officials said the operation to extinguish the fire was ongoing, and additional updates would be shared once the situation was fully brought under control. All workers were evacuated safely from the factory.
