ISLAMABAD: The NED University engineers successfully tested Pakistan’s first artificial intelligence-powered driverless car, marking a major milestone in the country’s technology sector.
The autonomous vehicle was tested on the roads of NED University, where it was seen operating smoothly without a driver, drawing attention from students and faculty. The project was initiated nearly a year ago under the National Center for Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences.
The vehicle is an electric car imported from China, which has been converted into a fully autonomous system using advanced artificial intelligence, robotics, mapping technology, sensors, and computer vision algorithms.
After a year of dedicated research and development, the project has now entered the practical phase, with road trials currently underway.
According to the project team, the car’s steering system has been developed using radar technology and computer vision. Work is also in progress on object detection, lane recognition, speed control, and traffic signal identification.
For safety reasons, the vehicle’s speed has been restricted to between 15 and 20 kilometers per hour.
Researchers say the car is designed to operate in Pakistan’s complex urban traffic conditions. Equipped with advanced sensor technology, it is capable of navigating potholes, uneven roads, and other local infrastructure challenges.
