Four killed, 15 injured as downpour lashes Lahore

LAHORE: At least four people were killed and 15 others injured in Lahore as torrential downpour pounded the provincial capital for the second day on Thursday, leading to roof and wall collapses in separate incidents.

Rescue 1122 officials said that the heavy rainfall caused the roof of a house near the Bandianwala bridge in Amar Sidhu to cave in, claiming the lives of four individuals, including three children below the age of 10. A 10-year-old child sustained injuries and was rushed to Lahore General Hospital for treatment.

In a distinct occurrence, a wall of the Government Mozang Teaching Hospital crumbled, causing injuries to 14 individuals. The wall collapsed onto the hospital’s waiting area, resulting in the collapse of the adjacent “waiting shade.” The injured were subsequently moved to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for treatment.

Punjab’s acting Chief Minister (CM), Mohsin Naqvi, assured that the situation was currently under control. During a press briefing in Lahore, he said that eight secretaries were assigned to monitor individual WASA zones.

Naqvi said that some ministers were designated to oversee specific divisions, while others were dispatched to divisional headquarters.

CM Naqvi called the rainfall in Lahore, which reached a “record-breaking” 291 millimeters, unforeseen.

Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa said that such a significant amount of rainfall within a short span had not been observed in the past three decades.

According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Nishtar Town received the highest precipitation with 65mm, followed by Johar Town with 57mm and Lakshmi Chowk with 38mm, Upper Mall 3.5mm, Mughalpura with 5mm and the Airport area 5.5mm.

Meanwhile, WASA Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed inspected drainage operations at various underpasses, and said that all disposal stations were operating at full capacity. he instructed the authorities concerned to ensure a steady fuel supply for all generators involved in floodwater drainage.
