France deploys aircraft carrier to red sea amid Hormuz security push

France has deployed its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier strike group to the Red Sea as part of preparations for a possible multinational mission aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States.

French officials said the move comes as continued instability around the strategic waterway threatens global trade and energy markets. Recent clashes in the region have heightened concerns over the fragile ceasefire between Tehran and Washington, with both sides accused of enforcing rival maritime blockades around the Strait.

According to the French presidency, Paris and London have been working for weeks on a proposal designed to guarantee safe passage through Hormuz once conditions improve. The initiative would reportedly involve coordination with Iran, while several countries have already expressed interest in joining the mission during preliminary discussions.

The French military said the carrier group, accompanied by Italian and Dutch warships, is being deployed to assess operational conditions, strengthen maritime security options, and reassure global shipping stakeholders. Officials added that the mission would operate within an international legal framework and could integrate partner nations into a broader defensive effort.

France has proposed that Iran allow unrestricted passage through the Strait in exchange for renewed negotiations with the United States on nuclear issues, missile development, and regional security. In return, Washington would ease its blockade measures and support diplomatic talks.

However, analysts note that Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz remains one of its strongest bargaining tools in negotiations with the West, making agreement on the proposal uncertain.

European nations, largely sidelined during the broader conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, are now increasingly concerned about the economic impact of disrupted shipping routes and volatile oil prices. The deployment is also seen as an attempt by European allies to demonstrate a stronger role in regional security efforts after criticism from US President Donald Trump over their reluctance to fully support Washington’s blockade strategy.
