G-B’s religious figure apologises over ‘disparaging remarks’

G-B’s religious figure

GILGIT: In a significant development that would bring an end to months of escalating religious tensions in Gilgit-Baltistan, Agha Baqir Alhussaini has issued a formal apology for his remarks that were “perceived as hurtful to religious sentiments”.

In his statement, Alhussaini expressed deep regret for any pain his words may have caused. “It was never my intention to cause distress or harm to anyone’s religious beliefs,” he said. Alhussaini clarified that his speech at the Jamia Mosque was intended as an expression of his personal beliefs in a private gathering, not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings or for publicity on social media.

The apology has been welcomed by the clerics of Diamer, who urged their followers to accept Alhussaini’s gesture in the spirit of forgiveness and to move forward in a spirit of harmony and mutual respect. They called off their protest, demanding the arrest of Agha Baqir.

This development follows a period of heightened tensions in the region, as reported by Hum News English.

The tensions had escalated following controversial remarks by three clerics, leading to large-scale protests and demands for action against them. The situation worsened with protests in Gilgit and Baltistan and the blocking of key roads, including the Babusar Pass Road and the Karakoram Highway.

The government’s approach to fostering peace through dialogue and negotiations, as well as the involvement of religious and community leaders, has been pivotal in de-escalating the situation. The overall situation in Gilgit-Baltistan is now under control, with hopes of continued tranquillity and mutual understanding among the diverse religious groups in the region.
