Gabby Logan was forced to leave Match of the Day midway through Wednesday night’s live broadcast, with a family tragedy confirmed hours after the show ended.
Logan, 52, had been presenting highlights of the latest Premier League fixtures when she abruptly exited the studio around 20 minutes into the programme. Viewers were told only that she had left due to a “family emergency”.
Fellow broadcaster Mark Chapman was rushed in from BBC radio studios to take over hosting duties for the remainder of the programme.
Death confirmed hours later
It emerged on Thursday morning that Logan’s father, former footballer Terry Yorath, had died aged 75 following a short illness.
Yorath, a former Wales international, enjoyed a long career in football as both a player and a manager. He earned 59 caps for Wales and played for clubs including Leeds United, Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Viewers stunned by sudden exit
Logan’s unexpected departure from the live broadcast left viewers confused, with many taking to social media to question why she had left the programme so suddenly.
Chapman addressed the situation shortly after arriving in the studio, telling viewers that Logan had needed to “rush off” to deal with the emergency.
Fans later praised the professionalism of the late handover, while sending messages of support to Logan once the news became public.
A footballing legacy
After retiring as a player, Yorath moved into management and spent four years in charge of the Wales national team in the early 1990s, coming close to qualifying for the 1994 World Cup.
Logan is one of three presenters who stepped into lead roles on Match of the Day following Gary Lineker’s departure, alongside Chapman and Kelly Cates.
