Irish actor Gary Lydon, known for his roles in The Banshees of Inisherin, Calvary and The Guard, has died at the age of 61, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the arts community.
Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most respected performers, Lydon built a decades-long career spanning theatre and film, earning praise for both his on-stage work and screen roles.
From Wexford stage to acclaimed screen roles
Born Gary O’Brien in London in 1964 to Irish parents, he moved to Wexford as a child and later adopted his mother’s surname professionally.
He first gained attention in the 1980s through Billy Roche’s Wexford Trilogy, appearing alongside actors including Aidan Gillen, before going on to establish himself across Irish theatre and cinema.
His later work included appearances in The Banshees of Inisherin, helping cement his reputation as a versatile and enduring talent.
Tributes honour ‘one of Ireland’s finest’
Wexford Arts Centre said it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the news, describing Lydon as one of the finest actors to emerge from the Irish stage.
The organisation noted that his final performance there, alongside his son, would remain especially meaningful.
His Gaelic Athletic Association club, St Michael’s, also paid tribute, recalling his continued presence and support over the years.
Family says loss is a ‘huge shock’
In a statement, Lydon’s family described his death as a “huge shock and deep loss”, adding that his greatest pride was being a father.
They said he would be missed by his children, partner and extended family, and that they would carry their memories of him “forever in our hearts”.
