Consumers have been left confused following conflicting reports about gas tariffs for the current fiscal year. Hours after news emerged of a possible reduction in prices, followed by claims of a hike, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has clarified that no increase has been approved.
A spokesperson for OGRA said both Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) are currently meeting their network revenue requirements. “There is no need for any revision in gas prices at this time,” the spokesperson added, ending speculation over recent tariff changes.
OGRA had earlier proposed reductions, suggesting a 3 percent decrease for SNGPL and an 8 percent decrease for SSGC. Under these proposals, the revised rates would have been Rs1804.08 per MMBTU for SNGPL and Rs1549.41 per MMBTU for SSGC.
Following these announcements, some reports incorrectly claimed that gas prices had been raised to Rs1852.80 per MMBTU for SNGPL and Rs1777.02 per MMBTU for SSGC. OGRA confirmed these reports were inaccurate and emphasised that existing tariffs remain in effect.
The regulatory authority urged the public and media to rely on official statements, noting that any genuine changes to gas tariffs would be formally announced.
Winter supply remains a priority
Separately, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik has directed gas companies to ensure an uninterrupted supply to households during the winter months. At a recent meeting, managing directors of SNGPL and SSGC confirmed that domestic gas availability is expected to be better than last winter. The discussion also included plans for RLNG-based domestic connections and seasonal load management.
Malik stressed the importance of proactive measures so that households do not face shortages during the colder months.
