Confusion continues as gas prices swing between increase, cut and now no change

OGRA gas prices

Consumers have been left puzzled after conflicting reports about gas tariffs in the current fiscal year. Just hours after news emerged of a possible reduction in gas prices, followed by an announcement of a hike, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has now clarified that no hike has been approved.

According to Ogra’s spokesperson, both Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) are currently meeting their network revenue requirements. “There is no need for any revision in gas prices at this time,” the spokesperson said, putting an end to speculation over recent tariff changes.

Earlier this week, Ogra had announced a 7.14 percent rise for SSGC and a 4.89 percent increase for SNGPL, which would have pushed SSGC’s rate to Rs1777.02 per mmBtu and SNGPL’s to Rs1852.80. The sudden reversal adds to the uncertainty consumers have been facing after initial reports of an 8 percent reduction had sparked hopes of relief.

Winter supply remains a priority

Separately, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik has directed gas companies to ensure an uninterrupted supply to households during the winter months. At a recent meeting, managing directors of SNGPL and SSGC confirmed that domestic gas availability is expected to be better than last winter. The discussion also included plans for RLNG-based domestic connections and seasonal load management.

Malik stressed the importance of proactive measures so that households do not face shortages during the colder months.
