Germany now part of Pakistan’s dual nationality arrangement

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Embassy in Germany has announced that Pakistanis can now hold dual nationality with Germany, following the government’s expanded dual citizenship framework. This move allows Pakistani citizens to retain their nationality while acquiring German citizenship.

The announcement comes under the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024, which established dual nationality agreements with 22 countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, and several European and Middle Eastern nations.

Previously, Pakistanis who acquired citizenship in countries without dual nationality agreements were required to renounce their Pakistani citizenship, creating legal and personal challenges for overseas Pakistanis. The new law addresses these long-standing issues, making it easier for citizens living abroad to maintain ties with their homeland.

According to the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, Pakistani citizens who acquire citizenship in any of the 22 designated countries will no longer need to give up their Pakistani nationality. The Ministry of Law has also confirmed that the amendment includes provisions to restore citizenship for those who had previously been forced to renounce it.

The law has been welcomed by lawmakers and officials as a significant step to protect the rights of Pakistanis abroad. Khurram Nawaz, chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior, said the amendment ensures that overseas Pakistanis will no longer have to choose between their adopted country and Pakistan.

In addition to Germany, work is underway on a potential dual nationality agreement with Turkey, with proposals currently under review by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior.

This expansion of dual nationality rights reflects Pakistan’s commitment to its diaspora and aims to simplify legal processes for millions of citizens living abroad.
