In a historic win for diversity and representation, Democrat Ghazala F. Hashmi has been elected as Virginia’s lieutenant governor, becoming the first Muslim woman ever to hold statewide office in the United States.
Hashmi defeated Republican writer and conservative radio host John Reid in Tuesday’s election, securing 53.8 percent of the vote against Reid’s 46.4 percent. The victory followed a tight race that saw her maintain a steady lead throughout the campaign despite a late surge in Republican polling.
Her success came just months after a tough Democratic primary in June, where she narrowly edged out former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and state Senator Aaron Rouse. Backed by the party’s progressive wing, Hashmi gained strong support from prominent Democrats, including California Representative Ro Khanna, who endorsed her early in the race.
From academia to politics
Born in Hyderabad, India, Hashmi moved to the United States as a child and went on to earn a PhD in English from Emory University. Before stepping into politics, she spent more than two decades teaching English at Virginia’s community colleges. Her background in education and focus on equity helped her connect with voters who viewed her as a symbol of perseverance and inclusivity.
Hashmi first made headlines in 2019 when she won a seat in the Virginia Senate, becoming the state’s first Muslim woman legislator. Her latest victory extends that legacy to statewide office, a milestone that underscores the shifting face of American politics.
In her campaign, Hashmi centred her message on affordability, education, and healthcare, pledging to make Virginia a place “where every family has the opportunity to thrive.” Her story, she said, reflects the possibilities of the American dream.
Democrats sweep statewide races
Hashmi’s win came alongside a broader Democratic sweep in Virginia. Former congresswoman and CIA officer Abigail Spanberger captured the governor’s seat, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to become the state’s first female governor. Their combined victories flipped control of the state back to Democrats, offering the party renewed momentum after setbacks in the 2024 national elections.
As Hashmi addressed supporters following her win, she described the moment as “a victory for every immigrant, every woman, and every Virginian who believes in progress.” Her triumph, she added, “is proof that representation matters and that barriers can be broken with hope and hard work.”
