Gilgit-Baltistan Police on high alert over terror threat

GILGIT: Gilgit Baltistan is bracing itself against a potential resurgence of terrorism, with security forces across the region being placed on high alert following warnings of imminent threats.

The authorities have ramped up security measures in anticipation of possible suicide attacks targeting the Ahle Tashi community during the holy month of Ramzan, particularly from the 19th to the 21st.

The warnings stem from a Special Information Report issued by the Additional Inspector General of Police of the Counter Terrorism Department, Punjab. The report, which was shared with the Inspector General of Police in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlights a sinister plan by Commander Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud of the now-defunct Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to execute targeted attacks.

According to the document, there is a high likelihood of assaults on processions, gatherings, and Majalis associated with the Youm-e-Ali (AS) commemorations on the 21st of Ramzan 2024, affecting regions in KP, G-B, and Punjab.

In response to these threats, Gilgit-Baltistan’s security apparatus has been significantly strengthened. In a statement to HUM News English, Gilgit-Baltistan Home Minister Shams Lone underscored the gravity of the threats not only to Gilgit-Baltistan but to the entire country.

He detailed the comprehensive steps being taken by state agencies, the police, and the home department to fortify the region’s defences.

“Every vehicle entering Gilgit-Baltistan undergoes a thorough inspection. We are intensifying our efforts, especially for the security of Majalis during Youm-e-Ali, Tarawih prayers, and other religious gatherings,” Lone explained. He further revealed that the security forces are conducting searches on burqa-clad women as well, aiming to prevent terrorists from masquerading as women to gain entry into the region.
Similarly, the Deputy Commissioner of Nagar issued a security alert highlighting the national security landscape, particularly noting recent terrorist attacks on Chinese nationals.

“Given the overall security situation and the recent incidents targeting Chinese citizens, it’s apparent there are potential threats that could see terrorists targeting the Youm-e-Ali processions and Majalis between the 19th and 21st of Ramzan. We urge the public to remain vigilant around suspicious individuals/activities and non-locals,” the Deputy Commissioner stated.

He also mentioned that pictures of potential suicide bombers have been released, cautioning that they could disguise themselves in various forms, including as women, labourers, students, or tourists. “The public is encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour to specified contact numbers immediately. Security agencies have been alerted, and checkpoints have been established at both entry and exit points of the district,” the DC added.
