WEB DESK: Pakistan marked the 78th Independence Day of Gilgit-Baltistan on Saturday, with national leaders paying rich tribute to the region’s people for their courage, patriotism, and historic decision to join the nation on November 1, 1947.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and the entire nation, recalling how the region’s “brave and patriotic citizens united to overthrow Dogra rule and chose to align with Pakistan.” He said the day serves as a reminder of their sacrifices, determination, and love for the motherland, qualities that “changed the course of the region’s history.”

The prime minister reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to Gilgit-Baltistan’s development, pledging progress in tourism, energy, infrastructure, and education. He said all opportunities for growth will be extended to the region’s youth so they can play a full role in the national mainstream. “Today reminds us to renew our pledge to continue the journey of freedom, unity, and development with new zeal,” he said.

At the official ceremony, President Asif Ali Zardari declared Gilgit-Baltistan his “home,” lauding the “heroic struggle” of its people for freedom and nation-building. He saluted the martyrs of the liberation movement and said, “The bravery of Gilgit-Baltistan’s people can never be forgotten.” Zardari highlighted the region’s strategic and natural wealth, calling for a dedicated airline for Gilgit-Baltistan, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving education and healthcare services.

The president also condemned human rights violations against Muslims in India, reiterating Pakistan’s moral support for the freedom of Jammu and Kashmir. He described CPEC as a symbol of Pakistan’s progress, crediting China as a “true friend and development partner,” and said Phase II of the project is advancing successfully.

Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan congratulated the people on the historic occasion, emphasizing their faith-based decision to join Pakistan and praising their patriotism and peaceful nature. “Gilgit-Baltistan is rich in natural resources,” he said, adding that the provincial government will continue to support religious harmony and social unity across the region.

He also confirmed that digital mapping of mosques and stipends for 65,000 clerics are underway, while facilities around places of worship are being improved.

“Gilgit-Baltistan’s people stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the nation in the journey of Pakistan’s progress,” President Zardari said, concluding the day’s celebrations with prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity for both Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan.
