Gina Gershon reveals the reason she turned down ‘Friday the 13th’ role

Gina Gershon

Actor Gina Gershon has opened up about turning down a lead role in Friday the 13th Part 2 early in her career, revealing the specific reason she ultimately walked away.

Speaking about her memoir AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, Gershon said the role required nudity in a scene she felt added little to the story.

“I was offered a lead in that movie… but it definitely felt kind of exploitative to me,” she said, explaining that her character would have been topless shortly before being killed.

‘It just didn’t feel right’

Gershon said she took time to reflect before making her decision, including speaking to her father, who encouraged her to trust herself.

“It’s your body. If you’re comfortable with it, I’m comfortable with it,” she recalled him saying.

After considering the role, she decided it was not right for her.

“I wasn’t comfortable with it… it seemed silly to me,” she said, adding that she had no issue with nudity if it served the character or story.

Standing her ground in Hollywood

The actor also shared insights from her time on Showgirls, where she said she often clashed with director Paul Verhoevenover creative choices.

She recalled one moment when he suggested adding unexpected nudity to a scene, prompting her to question the purpose behind it.

“How does it reveal my character? How does it move the story forward?” she said.

According to Gershon, the scene was ultimately filmed without the additional nudity.

From controversy to cult status

Released in 1995, Showgirls was initially criticised and underperformed at the box office, but has since developed a cult following.

Gershon said the experience taught her not to focus too heavily on critical reception.

“You can’t really listen to critics so much,” she said.

Trusting her instincts

Reflecting on her career, Gershon said trusting her instincts has been a consistent theme.

“I just want to do something that I feel proud of,” she said.

Her memoir explores her journey in Hollywood and the choices that shaped her path.
