Girl rescued after falling into open manhole

KARACAHI: Another child fell into an open manhole in Karachi in Manghopir area before a passerby pulled her out and saved her life.

According to sources, a Grade-1 student of a private school slipped into an open manhole near Garam Chashma in Karachi’s Manghopir area.

A citizen passing by the spot immediately rescued the child from the open manhole. The girl was identified as Anaya Ameen. She was returning home from school after dismissal when she fell into the manhole.

It is worth mentioning that on Sunday night, three-year-old Ibrahim fell into a manhole outside a private departmental store near Nipa Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

A heartbreaking video of the child’s mother went viral on social media.

Residents and the family had launched a search operation on their own by arranging machinery, but despite an entire night of efforts, the child could not be found.

Fourteen hours after the incident, a local youth recovered Ibrahim’s body from a drain nearly one kilometre away from the spot.

Two days after the incident, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited Ibrahim’s house, took responsibility for the tragedy and apologised to the bereaved family.

Following the incident, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) sent an inquiry report to the local government secretary, in which the construction of the BRT Red Line was cited as the cause of the accident.
