Global organisations launch initiatives ahead of International Nurses Day 2026

WEK DESK: Global organisations have begun launching initiatives to honour nurses ahead of International Nurses Day, recognising their vital role in healthcare systems worldwide.

Observed annually on May 12, the day will be marked in 2026 under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” set by the International Council of Nurses.

Several organisations have already rolled out tribute campaigns. The Rapid Relief Team has announced a month-long series of events across North America starting this May to celebrate nursing professionals.

Meanwhile, St Wilfrid’s Hospice in the UK highlighted the crucial contribution of its nursing staff, who provide palliative care to more than 340 patients at any given time. The hospice operates services worth over £10 million annually, offering free end-of-life care throughout the year.

In a statement, the hospice emphasised the dedication and expertise of its nurses, noting their role in delivering physical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients both within the facility and in the community. It also pointed out that its services rely heavily on public donations to remain free of charge.

International Nurses Day traces its origins back to 1965 in the United States, with May 12 later officially designated in 1974 to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

The day continues to serve as a global platform to recognise the dedication and resilience of nurses working under challenging conditions.
