Go electric: All Islamabad petrol pumps to get EV charging stations

ISLAMABAD: Ushering in a much needed step towards implementation of the Electric Vehicles (EV) Policy, the government has announced the installation of EV charging stations across all petrol pumps within Islamabad.

The meeting was chaired by the Federal Minister Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, as he reviewed progress on various initiatives. To boost the morale of students, he also announced that 120 high-achievers from the Federal Board will be provided free e-bikes. Similarly, the government also aims to give 39,000 e-bikes and 19,000 e-rickshaws on subsidised loans to ensure that the public adopts clean energy vehicles.

While the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been directed to ensure that the charging facilities are installed at all petrol stations, it was further stated that the formal EV policy would be announced soon. The government had earlier said that it would introduce another electric vehicle policy by November 30, with plans to further drive eco-friendly transport initiatives.

The meeting assessed the development of 40 charging stations along motorways and national highways and emphasized the need for transparency by digitalizing the entire process.

This move comes as the government aims to revolutionise the transport sector by setting up 10,000 EV charging stations in the next six years. Apart from concerns involving range anxiety and reliability of electric bikes and cars, the limited presence of charging stations has been a major factor deterring people from buying EVs. However, the introduction of more charging stations might encourage consumers to consider electric alternatives.

Last month, Hussain spoke about the government’s plan to reduce fuel dependency that would also help lower carbon emissions and promote sustainable, cleaner transport alternatives by 2030. He had further  revealed that around 31 companies have shown interest in investing in Pakistan’s EV sector, with two firms already securing production licenses. He also highlighted Pakistan’s readiness to export three-wheelers and mentioned that private sector manufacturing activities would start soon.

According to Asia Times, the government aims for 30% EV adoption by 2030 and a fully electric fleet by 2060, and that major Chinese EV manufacturers, such as BYD, Changan, and MG, are entering the Pakistani market, while local companies like Nishat Group are partnering with international players to introduce EVs.

To support this shift, the government is working on establishing a nationwide charging infrastructure. This development positions Pakistan as a promising market for EVs and contributes to a more sustainable future.
