KARACHI: In the rugged terrain of Kirthar, a grim situation has unfolded as a mysterious viral disease, locally known as ‘goat plague,’ has begun taking a toll on the native ibex population at the Kirthar National Park in Sindh.

Over the past three months, numerous ibexes have succumbed to this ailment, called ‘goat plague.’

Reports indicated that the disease has been spreading among the local ibex population, primarily transmitted from domestic goats.

Concerned locals have repeatedly alerted the Sindh Wildlife Department about the alarming situation.

Experts said that the virus leads to swelling of the eyes and causes affected animals to refrain from eating and drinking. This, in turn, results in the tragic demise of these magnificent creatures. Goat Plague commonly affects wild sheep and goats, including ibex.

Kirthar, a region known for its stunning landscapes and unique wildlife, is home to nearly 25,000 ibexes.

Conservation authorities in Sindh are now grappling with the challenge of containing the disease’s spread and protecting this vital part of the ecosystem.

Spokesperson for the Sindh Wildlife Department Javed Mehr has cautioned against the spread of rumours regarding the outbreak, Geo News reported.

He emphasised that the disease’s prevalence often increases during the season when wild animals migrate in search of food, and it can also be transmitted via insect vectors, like certain types of flies.

While the exact origin and causes of the outbreak are still under investigation, the local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual wildlife behaviour or signs of illness among the ibex.

Efforts are also being made to raise awareness about preventing contact between domestic goats and the wild ibex population to curb the spread of the disease, they said.

The ‘goat plague’ outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between human activities and the preservation of the natural world.

Efforts to protect these majestic ibex and their fragile ecosystem continue in Kirthar’s challenging terrain.
