The first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero has been unveiled, offering a striking look at the next chapter in the franchise as the iconic monster heads towards New York City.
Director Takashi Yamazaki debuted the footage at CinemaCon, confirming the film will serve as a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, which won an Academy Award for best visual effects.
“This film will be a direct sequel,” Yamazaki said, adding that it will continue the story of the Shikishima family.
Darker story and rising stakes
The filmmaker hinted at a more intense narrative, with both Japan and its central characters facing greater danger.
“In this new film, an even deeper despair will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family,” Yamazaki said, suggesting the emotional stakes will be significantly heightened.
He added that the journey from “Minus” to “Zero” would be far from easy, pointing to escalating challenges ahead.
The teaser drew a strong response, particularly its closing moments, which show Godzilla approaching the Statue of Liberty as it advances through New York City.
A line in the footage hints at a risky plan to counter the threat, underscoring the scale of destruction looming in the sequel.
Building on global success
The previous instalment, Godzilla Minus One, followed a former kamikaze pilot dealing with trauma in post-war Japan while confronting Godzilla.
The film earned more than $110 million at the global box office and became the first Japanese production to win an Oscar for visual effects.
Godzilla Minus Zero is set for a theatrical release on November 6, as anticipation builds for the next phase of the long-running monster franchise.
