Green initiative: Orange Line train set to go solar

LAHORE: In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, Lahore is gearing up to convert the Orange Line train to solar energy. The announcement was made by the caretaker provincial transport minister Ibrahim Hasan Murad.

Punjab’s transport minister also revealed that negotiations with NESPAK, based on recommendations from the Energy Department, are in their final stages.

Upon the completion of the study, which is expected within three months of signing the agreement with NESPAK, the solarization project for the Orange Line train will commence, as stated by Murad.

Climate chaos unfolds before our eyes as rainfall remains elusive

Key aspects of the initiative include the installation of solar panels at crucial locations such as depots, stabling yards, and stations along the Orange Line. The Superintendent Provincial confirmed that solar grid stations are set to be constructed at Stubbing Yard and Orange Train Depot, marking significant progress in the implementation of renewable energy solutions for public transportation.

The caretaker provincial minister further highlighted that the transition to solar energy will not be limited to the Orange Line train alone but will also extend to the train stations.

In addition to the environmental benefits, the initiative is expected to yield substantial cost savings. According to estimates provided by the supervising provincial minister, the switch to solar energy is projected to save more than Rs 3 billion annually.

This move underscores Lahore’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and sets a commendable precedent for integrating renewable energy into the public transportation sector.
