LAHORE: Senior politician and former Punjab governor Mian Muhammad Azhar, father of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar, passed away in Lahore after a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed on Tuesday.

Mian Azhar, who died at the age of 80 years, served as Punjab’s governor from August 1990 to April 1993 under the presidency of Ghulam Ishaq Khan.

He was recently elected as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-129 (Lahore-XIII) in the 2024 general elections.

He had aligned himself with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) after contesting the elections as an independent backed by the PTI.

Widely regarded as a veteran figure in Pakistani politics, Mian Azhar remained a close supporter of the PTI in recent years.

His political career spanned several decades, including prominent roles in both government and party leadership.

In June 2023, Hammad Azhar claimed that his 88-year-old father had been taken into custody and moved to an undisclosed location. However, he later confirmed Azhar’s return home after two days.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the passing of the former governor and extended her condolences to the bereaved family.
