HBO ‘Harry Potter’ behind-the-scenes special reveals the magic behind the magic

HBO has offered its most detailed look yet at the upcoming Harry Potter series, giving fans a glimpse into the scale and ambition behind the reboot.

A new behind-the-scenes special, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, released on April 5, takes viewers inside the production as filming continues at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK.

Inside the massive casting search

One of the biggest takeaways is the sheer scale of the casting process.

Casting directors Emily Brockmann and Lucy Bevan revealed they reviewed more than 40,000 auditions before losing count, as children across the UK were invited to submit tapes for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Dominic McLaughlin, cast as Harry Potter, impressed with what was described as “quiet confidence”, while Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout stood out as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

The search extended across multiple cities, including Manchester, Glasgow and London, as the team looked for a new generation to lead the franchise.

A more ‘real’ kind of magic

The series is also taking a different approach to its magical world, leaning heavily into practical effects.

The production team revealed that many creatures are being built using animatronics rather than relying entirely on CGI, with each owl made using around 36,000 individually placed feathers.

Other creatures, including a redesigned Scabbers and a newly introduced toad, have been engineered with internal mechanisms to replicate natural movement.

The goal, according to the production team, is to ground the magic in realism and draw more directly from nature.

Reimagining the wizarding world

Costume designers have also worked to create a clear visual distinction between Muggles and wizards.

Muggle clothing is inspired by early 1990s fashion, with muted tones and synthetic fabrics, while wizard attire incorporates natural materials such as wool, cotton and tartan.

Dumbledore’s wardrobe features a leaf-printed coat, reflecting a more nature-driven interpretation of magic in the new series.

A long-term journey for the cast

With the series expected to span several years, cast members have already reflected on the long-term commitment involved.

John Lithgow, who plays Dumbledore, noted he would be in his late 80s by the time the series concludes, while others spoke about watching the young cast grow into their roles over time.

The series is set to debut on Christmas Day, marking the beginning of a new era for the Harry Potter franchise.
