Heightened geopolitical tensions: PTA urges public to avoid sharing unverified information

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Saturday issued an advisory urging citizens to refrain from sharing “unverified, inflammatory, or misleading information” on social media and digital platforms amid escalating regional tensions.

In its statement, PTA emphasised the importance of responsible online behaviour during the current sensitive national situation. Citizens were advised not to share, forward, or upload content that lacks authenticity, warning that the spread of rumours and fake news could lead to legal consequences under applicable laws.

“PTA calls upon all citizens to act with caution, maturity, and a strong sense of national responsibility to help maintain stability and public confidence,” the statement added.

The advisory comes against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, following reports of a joint military action by the United States and Israel targeting Iran earlier in the day. The situation has fueled widespread speculation and misinformation online.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, strongly condemned the attacks during a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

In addition to developments in the Middle East, tensions have also escalated along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Pakistan reportedly launched “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” in response to what officials described as unprovoked cross-border firing from Afghan territory on Thursday evening.

Authorities continue to urge the public to rely on verified sources of information and avoid contributing to the spread of unconfirmed reports during this volatile period.
